Lars Von Trier Spills Some More Details On 'Melancholia,' Will Start Film With The Earth Being Crushed

Here's what we know so far: Lars Von Trier's next film, "Melancholia," is an ambitious psychological disaster film about two sisters (Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg) who deal with a planet that is looming dangerously close to Earth. Dunst's character is set to get married to Alexander Skarsgaard with his father Stellan playing the best man, while John Hurt is slotted as Dunst's father. But, in a book about the director titled simply, "Genius" by Politiken journalist Nils Thorsen, Von Trier fills in more details on what is easily one of our most anticipated films of next year. And he'll be starting in a spectacular fashion, with the end.

“In ‘Melancholia’ I start with the end. Because what is interesting is not what happens but how it happens! So we begin by seeing the world being crushed, then we can tell the story afterwards,” he said. “In this way you don’t have to sit and form theories about what will happen, but can delve down into some other levels and become interested in the pictures and the universe – that’s what I imagine.”

So, Von Trier is gonna get the explosions out of the way first and then presumably flashback so we can focus on character and how things got to where they were. A fascinating way to structure the picture and in typical Von Trier fashion, it won't be an easy ride for the women in the film and he describes the sisters and their take on the upcoming disaster. One sister will calmly accept her fate, while the other will be positively freaking out.

“And there are beautiful pictures as she is just standing there looking at the planet that comes closer and closer and accepts it. The other woman, on the other hand, becomes increasingly panicky,” von Trier says. No word if that panic ends with genitals being mutilated or babies falling out of windows.

Other details revealed that Dunst's character, after her marriage, will slowly pull away from her husband and work, slowing down her pace of life, while Gainsbourg's character, upon learning of her young 6 year-old nephew's fear about the world coming to an end, "positions herself in between the disaster and the boy and tells him about a special cave where he can be safe." And of course, Von Trier's well documented own anxieties from his own life will play out on screen. When he was a kid he apparently built pretend bomb shelters under the kitchen table to calm his nerves.

The film went in front of cameras late this summer and we think it's a safe bet to assume Lars Von Trier will once again drive his mobile home to Cannes next year to premiere the film. Any new Von Trier film is pretty much an event and we can't wait to see what he has in store next.

Watch: Trailer For 'All Good Things' Looks Like A TV Movie-Of-The-Week

Listen, we really tried to stay enthusiastic for this, but when a film is kept from release as "All Good Things" was by The Weinstein Company, it's not just Harvey Weinstein being a jerk (director Andrew Jarecki later bought back the North American rights, and Magnolia are now distributing the film).

We finally have our first real look at "All Good Things" and it plays like a TV-movie-of-the-week thriller.
Starring Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst, Frank Langella and Kristen Wiig, the film is a "based-on-true-events" story about Robert Durst, a wealthy real-estate mogul's son who was suspected but never tried for the disappearance and murder of his wife Kathie. Did he do it? Didn't he? We don't know, but what we do know is that the film looks by-the-numbers and the score by Rob Simonsen is distractingly rote. It seems like Harv had a good reason for trying to keep this one on the shelf.

"All Good Things" will hit VOD on November 5th before opening in New York on December 3rd. Full synopsis and trailer after the jump, or watch it in HD at Apple.
Inspired by the most notorious missing person's case in New York history, ALL GOOD THINGS is a love story and murder mystery set against the backdrop of a New York real estate dynasty in the 1980s. Produced and directed by Andrew Jarecki (director of the Academy Award-nominated doc Capturing the Friedmans and producer of Catfish), the film was inspired by the story of Robert Durst, scion of the wealthy Durst family. Mr. Durst was suspected but never tried for killing his wife Kathie who disappeared in 1982 and was never found. The film stars Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst and Frank Langella as the powerful patriarch, and captures the emotion and complexity of this real-life unsolved mystery.

Watch: 5 Minute Preview Of 'All Good Things' Starring Ryan Gosling & Kirsten Dunst

After an early international trailer for the film was quickly scrubbed from the internet, we now have our first real look at the long delayed "All Good Things," starring Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst.

Directed by Andrew Jarecki and shot way back in early 2008, the film was left languishing on the shelves of The Weinstein Company for the best part of the last year. However, in March, Jarecki made the move to buy back the film from TWC and found a new distributor in Magnolia late this summer.

In this preview for On Demand customers, we get an extensive look at the film and performances, and it looks interesting (Ryan Gosling cross dressing!) with a certain noir-ish quality to the early frames. But it's still hard to tell if the film will elevate above its lurid, real-life trappings.
The film is "inspired by the true story of Robert Durst (Gosling) the scion of a wealthy New York family who was acquitted of killing his neighbor and whose first wife vanished into thin air." The true story of Robert Durst is ripe with bizarro details that are too much to detail here, but this extensive summary of his life is definitely worth a read.

The film will hit VOD on November 5th and begin a limited theatrical release on December 3rd.

'All Good Things' With Ryan Gosling & Kirsten Dunst Gets Poster, December 3rd Release Date

It's been a long, bumpy road for Andrew Jarecki's non-documentary feature debut "All Good Things" to reach theaters.

Starring Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst, Frank Langella and Kristen Wiig, the film, shot way back in early 2008, was left languishing on the shelves of The Weinstein Company for the best part of the last year. However, in March, the Jarecki made the move to buy back the film from TWC, and found a new distributor in Magnolia late this summer.

Well, the film has finally been given some solid release dates. It will hit VOD on November 5th before opening in New York on December 3rd; a national rollout will follow.
The film is "inspired by the true story of Robert Durst (Gosling) the scion of a wealthy New York family who was acquitted of killing his neighbor and whose first wife vanished into thin air." The true story of Robert Durst is ripe with bizarro details --- he dressed as a woman; while a fugitive from justice he was arrested trying to steal a sandwich even though he had $500 in his pocket -- that are too much to detail here, but this extensive summary of his life is definitely worth a read.

You can take a look at the new unveiled poster and marvel at the poor photoshop job on Ryan Gosling's head being placed on another body. And look! It's a bloody, New York City skyline! Ooooh. Straight-to-DVD one sheet aside, we are still curious about this one; hopefully a new trailer will drop soon. [Vulture]

Chloe Moretz Says Indie Drama 'The Hick' Probably Next, Kirsten Dunst In Talks & 'Kick-Ass 2' Is "All Rumor"

While we're bummed audiences pretty much ignored "Let Me In" this weekend, around the Playlist water cooler, we can all agree it's a great film, with some of us arguing (blasphemy!) that its even better than Tomas Alfredson's "Let The Right One In." At any rate, Chloe Moretz is ace in the film, and her career is on the rise. In an interview with Collider, the actress talked about what's next on her plate and also, what isn't.

Right now, the actress is filming Martin Scorsese's "Hugo Cabret" but after that she reveals, "I think my next one will be 'Hick' with Derick Martini, which is very exciting. Kirsten Dunst is in talks to be in the movie." The film was first announced this summer and its a tremendously gritty film.
It "tracks a 13-year-old Nebraska girl who gets more than she bargained for when she runs away to Las Vegas." The pistol-packin' protagonist ends up rolling with a "cocaine snorting grifter" who enlists her help for a robbery and later gets raped by a man in a secluded motel. It will definitely be a dramatic shift for the actress. Dunst's potential involvement is definitely new, but it looks like the project is slowly putting the pieces together.

As for "Kick-Ass 2" which Mark Millar keeps insisting is happening, Moretz pours a bucket of cold water on that idea saying, "Yeah, I’d totally love to be Hit Girl again, but I don’t know about 'Kick-Ass 2.' Everyone’s like, “It’s just been announced!,” but I’m like, “No, it hasn’t. That’s all rumor.” This echoes comments by other cast members including most recently, Aaron Johnson, who said he hasn't seen a script or heard anything about it even though he talks regularly to Matthew Vaughn.

Big things on the horizon for the actress who is also linked to Karyn Kusama's hunting/survival film "The Rut" and more recently, "Emily The Strange" (though she says that one is still a bit of a way off). Moretz is in theaters now with "Let Me In" and will be seen after that in Ami Mann's "The Fields."

Emma Stone To Be Offered Mary Jane Role In 'Spider-Man' Remake

Looks like speculation has ended, with "Easy A" star Emma Stone looking to step into the massive shoes of Kirsten Dunst as Spider-Man's redhead love interest Mary Jane Watson for Sony's untitled "Spider-Man" relaunch. Deadline Hollywood has announced that Stone should be expecting an offer very soon to star alongside Andrew Garfield in Marc Webb's "re-imagining" of the Spidey mythos. Stone has made some good money for Sony with both "Zombieland" and "Easy A," so it's no surprise they would pick someone so prominent on their Rolodex.

We like Stone, but it's hard to say anything positive or negative about what is such a secretive project. Though there is fresh talent all around, how much pressure will Sony feel to adhere to the formula that led the "Spider-Man" franchise to become a billion dollar extravaganza? In other words, will Stone being doing the damsel-in-distress BS that Dunst visibly grew bored from, or will she have a chance to utilize her comedic talent and make Mary Jane a fully-functioning character that might convince girls these movies are worth watching on their own?

Sony remains on the hunt for a Gwen Stacy character as well, revisiting the love triangle/square that helped the maligned "Spider-Man 3" to almost $900 million in worldwide theatrical gross. Adding Stone, who's appeal isn't exactly va-va-voom but more bubbly and warm suggests they might go in another direction for the Stacy character, but it's hard to say what's going on in Sony offices regarding this massive gamble, even with names like Mia Wasikowska and Dianna Agron being tossed around. But we're still bitter about not getting Oded Fehr as Kraven in Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man IV: Keep On Webbin'" so maybe we're not the ones best suited to speculation.
