Of all the actors who got a boost off "Inception" this summer (which is pretty much all of them, to some degree or other), Tom Hardy was perhaps the breakout star. Those of who'd seen the likes of "Bronson" or his TV work like "Stuart: A Life Backwards" had been fans for a while, but his role as the playful, flamboyant forger Eames brought the joys of the actor to a wider audience. He's already set for a small role in "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy," and the lead alongside Chris Pine and Reese Witherspoon in McG's action-comedy "This Means War," but suffered a blow over the weekend as "Fury Road," in which Hardy was set to take over Mel Gibson's role as Mad Max, was delayed for over a year.
This is no big problem for Hardy, as Deadline is reporting that he's landed another of the most sought-after roles around -- he's joining the cast of Christopher Nolan's still-untitled third "Batman" film, the follow-up to the critical and commercial smash "The Dark Knight." Many had tipped "Inception" co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt for a role in the film, and while that could still theoretically be in play, Hardy looks to be locked in.
There's no word on what character Hardy will play -- Warner Bros. won't even confirm if the role is villainous in nature. But unless he's playing Robin (who Nolan has promised won't make an appearance), it seems safe to assume that he'll be a bad guy. But who could it be? The Lizard? Venom? Sorry, wrong superhero franchise...
The Riddler is the one that's been batted about most by fans, as the character seems to fit the realistic nature of Nolan's films the best. If that is Hardy's role, it can be guaranteed that, like Heath Ledger's Joker, it'll be a wildly different version of the character than ever seen before. This is still breaking, so we'll update if and when more information become available. The third Batman begins filming next spring for a release in the summer of 2012.
Now a Max has been picked, in the shape of "Inception" star Tom Hardy, and has started to fill out the rest of the cast, with the likes of Charlize Theron (who'll play an amputee, doubled by a Paralympic swimmer), Zoe Kravitz and Nicholas Hoult set to appear, it looks like "Fury Road," the two-part continuation of George Miller's "Mad Max" franchise, may actually happen. The film's been in the works for years, and was at one stage set to feature original star Mel Gibson in the role he created, before he lost his damn fool mind, and had its summer start date delayed, but it finally looks like things are underway.
Bleeding Cool had a new piece of information on casting, suggesting that British actor-writer-director Noel Clarke was set to join the cast in an unknown role. Clarke's probably best known in the States for his supporting role in "Centurion," and for appearing in a recurring role in "Doctor Who," but he's fast becoming a force to be reckoned with in the British film industry. He picked up a BAFTA Rising Star award after writing, directing and starring in gritty drama "Adulthood," the sequel to his writing debut "Kidulthood." He followed it up with this year's crime drama "4.3.2.1," starring Emma Roberts, and has a bunch of projects in development, including the sports drama "Fast Girls."
Clarke's an extremely talented guy, and, while he hasn't as yet produced anything that quite justifies his planet-sized ego, it's probably only a matter of time. He's a strong addition to "Fury Road," and it can only help his profile internationally. There's only one problem here: a tweet from Mr. Clarke himself this morning: "@bleedingcool hey dudes. thanks for the interview. I can confirm that I'm 100% NOT IN MAD MAX. unless you know something I don't cheers : )". So, uh, yeah. Move along, nothing to see here.
It looks like Charlize Theron's character in the forthcoming double bill of "Mad Max" films from director George Miller will be missing part of a limb.
In an interview with ABC (via Moviehole), Australian paralympic swimmer Annabelle Williams, whose left arm was amputated below the elbow, reveals that she will be a stunt double for Theron in the upcoming film.
"I got a phone call from one of the people at [the production company] and they said it's got a $200 million budget. My mum was sitting there and we were just like 'What?' Then they said that the lead actress was Charlize Theron and I nearly died. And then I thought to myself the resemblance (between Theron and myself) is striking." She laughed, adding: "Not at all. And she's about a foot taller than me."
Once she was given the thumbs up to be Theron's double in the film, she was put immediately into training to learn Muay Thai. She reveals about the action scenes in the film, "They are going to film me from a very long distance for the fighting so that they don't have to CGI out her arm. I will be her, but just not [in] the face."
The film(s), originally slated to begin filming this month, were pushed back to February as Miller builds his own 3D rigs and perfects the technology he's developing for the shoot. The two films -- with the rumored titles being "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Mad Max: Furiosa" -- will star quite an array of talent including Tom Hardy (taking over Mel Gibson's iconic role), Nicholas Hoult, Riley Keough, Zoe Kravitz, Adelaide Clemens and Teresa Palmer.
No word on release dates yet but don't expect to see anything until 2012.
