For a man who was scoring video games only ten years ago, composer Michael Giacchino wasted no time in becoming one of the most in-demand composers around. Hand picked by J.J. Abrams to write the music for TV show "Alias" (he's since gone on to compose "Lost" and "Six Degrees" on TV for Abrams), he made his feature debut in spectacular fashion on Pixar's "The Incredibles," knocking out a stunning, John Barry-homaging work that launched him into the big leagues.
Since then, despite working on "Lost" consistently throughout its six year run, he's also managed to pull in some strong work -- working with Abrams on "Mission Impossible 3" and "Star Trek," and Pixar on "Ratatouille" and "Up," the latter of which is probably his best work to date, picking him up the Academy Award for best score. And even when he works on films that aren't up to scratch, like "Land of the Lost" or "Speed Racer," his music is often the best part of them.
He can currently be heard in theaters with the eerie, choir-tinged score for "Let Me In" (which is lovely, but a little intrusive -- one of the film's few flaws), and, with the day job on "Lost" wrapping up this year, he's lined up half a dozen projects that'll keep him busy through to 2012.
A Variety profile of the composer has revealed that Giacchino is reteaming with a number of directors he's worked with before; Abrams on "Super 8," Brad Bird on the fourth "Mission Impossible" and Thomas Bezucha, with whom he worked on "The Family Stone," on the Selena Gomez comedy "Monte Carlo."
But he's also making waves with new helmers, teaming with two members of the Pixar Brain Trust -- John Lasseter on "Cars 2" (replacing Randy Newman, who did the original) and Andrew Stanton on the live-action "John Carter of Mars." Finally, and probably the first to hit the screens, he's currently working on the Seth Rogen/Joseph Gordon-Levitt comedy "Live with It" (formerly known as "I'm With Cancer," which Jonathan Levine ("The Wackness") is directing.
We love Giacchino's work, on the whole, and it's good to see him busy, and on a generally promising selection of projects. We only hope that it won't see him spread too thinly, but we imagine that after knocking out two dozen episodes of "Lost" a year for the last six, this'll seem like a holiday.
"Slumdog Millionaire" actor Anil Kapoor and French actress Lea Seydoux have been added to the growing cast of the fourth installment of "Mission: Impossible," but most intriguingly, they will be joining the previously announced Michael Nyqvist as villains in the film.
Lea Seydoux is probably best known to arthouse crowds on this side of the ocean for her turn in "La belle personne." More recently, she appeared in Ridley Scott's "Robin Hood" and was one of the final candidates for the part of Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher's "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo." As for Anil Kapoor, he may be more familiar, as he played the game show host in the Oscar-winning "Slumdog Millionaire" and is a longtime fixture in Bollywood cinema.
The film, which has already started shooting, now boasts quite the ensemble cast and it seems like numerous baddies for Ethan Hunt and his crew to tackle. Kapoor and Seydoux join Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton, Vladimir Mashkov, Michael Nyqvist, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg and Josh Holloway in the film. It will hit theaters on December 16, 2011. Holloway will play one of the members of the Mission Impossible Force and joins the impressive cast list for the film, which includes Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton, Vladimir Mashkov, Michael Nyqvist, Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg. Last we heard, casting was still out for the boss of the IMF but we doubt that's the role he will be taking.The film will begin production this fall under the codename "Aries" with a globetrotting shoot that will include Vancouver, Prague, Dubai and the U.S., and is scheduled to hit theaters on December 16, 2011. Chalk it up as rumor for now, but Australian movie site What's Playing are reporting that Michael Nyqvist, the star of the Swedish film version of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo," is in final talks to join the fourth entry of the "Mission: Impossible" franchise as the villain.
The news is interesting because as you might recall, the original Lisbeth Salander, Noomi Rapace, was reported last month to be taking meetings in Hollywood for a variety of projects, one of them being the currently untitled "Mission: Impossible 4." She eventually signed on for "Sherlock Holmes 2" (the site claims Rapace wasn't interested in the role anyway) but if these reports are true, it looks like Rapace isn't the only 'Dragon Tattoo' cast member looking to make a leap across the pond.
Nyqvist's role is apparently meaty, with an insider saying “They have like a terrific 5 page fight sequence at the end of the film - brutal, brutal stuff. He’s this very charming, but calculating bad guy. Not your typical spy-film villain.”
But there are reportedly more roles to fill, with producers looking for a big name to take on the role of the head of the IMF (not the banking institution, but the organization the agents work for). The film will begin production this fall under the codename "Aries" with a globe-trotting shoot that will include Vancouver, Prague, Dubai and the U.S. and is scheduled to hit theaters on December 16, 2011.
Russian actor Vladimir Mashkov has joined the cast of the next entry in "Mission: Impossible" franchise marking his highest profile Hollywood gig to date.
The actor and occasional director is probably best know to North American audiences for his role as the villain in "Behind Enemy Lines." He's also appeared in the forgettable Robert De Niro thriller "15 Minutes" and in the Sergey Bodruv's "The Quickie" with Jennifer Jason Leigh. Mashkov will play, naturally, a Russian agent in the film.
