Now that we know "The Tree Of Life" will finally hit theaters in 2011, we can start obsessing on the director's next project, the untitled feature that currently is shooting in Oklahoma.
Starring Rachel McAdams, Ben Affleck, Javier Bardem, Rachel Weisz and Olga Kurylenko, plot details are as usual completely under wraps, but during the film's production, numerous pics and video of Malick and his crew shooting the film have made their way online. Now, more pics emerged thanks to local Osage County newspaper The Bigheart Times, along with a couple intriguing bits of info.
First up, the solid and continually underrated Barry Pepper has joined the cast of the film and along with Javier Bardem, plays a priest in the pic. So what does this indicate about the plot? We have no idea except that perhaps there will be some thematic crossover from "The Tree Of Life." The article goes on to indicate that shooting wrapped in Osage County last week, but no word yet on how many work weeks are slotted for filming. And of course after that comes Malick's painstaking editing process, so this is one is still a long time from being seen (hell, we're still waiting on something official from "The Tree Of Life"; a release date even, not to mention an official still or trailer).
But, we're mostly just thrilled not to have to wait a decade for another Malick film. That said, we don't expect this one to be ready until 2012 at the earliest so we will have to be patient. Two Malick films within such proximity is something to be excited for.
Jessica Lange and Sam Neill have joined "The Vow" with Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum.The story centers on the real-life story of a newlywed New Mexico couple, Kim and Krickitt Carpenter (McAdams and Tatum), whose lives are turned upside down when they are involved in a car accident that leaves the wife with no memory of her new partner. The husband must then attempt to win her heart all over again. Things get a slight twist when Kim's former fiancé (Scott Speedman) enters the picture and tries "to rekindle a romance in her amnesiac state." Jessica McNamee will play Kim's younger sister.
No word yet on what roles the latest additions to the currently shooting film will play, but it will be a reunion for Lange and director Michael Sucsy who recently worked together on "Grey Gardens."
Is it just us or is the marketing machine behind the upcoming comedy "Morning Glory" next to non-existent? With its release exactly four weeks away, things have been quiet but there is still time for Paramount to launch a blitz to get some attention back on the film.
That first step seems to have come with fresh new one sheets for the film, but there's no word yet if any checks are being cut to Oasis. Also no word if Paramount is aware what the other meaning for "morning glory" is. At any rate, in the movie, it's the title of a morning talk/news show where Rachel McAdams has to wrestle with the egos of battling co-anchors played by Harrison Ford and Diane Keaton.
The film was originally slated for a summer release and pushed back amid word that the studio was eyeing some kind of dark horse comedy entry in the awards season race, but that doesn't really seem likely at this point. "Morning Glory" rises into theaters on November 12th.
A much more vague report comes from Production Weekly's Twitter today concerning the film, "Welcome To People," the directorial debut of Alex Kurtzman.
Kurtzman is known as one half of the genre-based powerhouse writing/producing duo that includes Roberto Orci. After years of TV work for J.J. Abrams ("Alias,") the twosome started breaking out in a big way after they penned both "Mission: Impossible 3," both "Transformers" films and Abrams' highly successful "Star Trek" reboot. They also co-scripted Jon Favreau's upcoming "Cowboys & Aliens" sci-fi western and their Paper Products production shingle have made them the producers or exec-producers of myriad TV and film projects including, "Fringe," "Hawaii Five-O," the in-development, "Transformers Prime" TV series, and the feature-length thriller "2:22" (they're also exec producers/writers on "Star Trek 2," but oddly enough have nothing to do with Michael Bay's "Transformers 3." Maybe it was their backtalk).
And yet Kurtzman's "Welcome To People," is a veritable 180: a family drama. Production Weekly is "hearing" that a couple of actors have been "mentioned" for parts in the film and they include Chris Pine, Rachel McAdams and Meryl Streep. And while that does sound like a powerhouse trio, and surely there will be more names to come, we wouldn't get too excited just yet. Update: We're told by representative for Kurtzman that while Pine is in early discussions for a role in the picture (the lead), Streep and McAdams are not.
Mentioned usually means that the producers and studio (Dreamworks) have been brainstorming actors and these three have probably floated to the top of their, "wouldn't it be awesome if..." wishlist, but that may not even mean a script is out to their agent, let alone whether they like the part they're being sought for. Then shooting schedules have to come into play, negotiations if they get that far, etc.
Either way, "Welcome To People centers on a twenty-something man (Pine?) who, after the death of his father, must deliver $150,000 in cash to an alcoholic sister (McAdams) he didn’t know he had as well as her son, a 12-year-old with major anger management issues (at one point, he tries to blow up his middle school’s pool). The man doesn’t want to part with the money, but still reaches out to them without telling them who he really is.
While it's nice to see Kurtzman is aiming high for his filmmaking debut, it's unknown whether these busy A-list stars will deign to appear in a picture by a director who's never made a film before. That said the Kurtzman/Orci brand has major pull, so surely the actors will at least consider the part. "Welcome To People" is an old script by Kurtzman that he wrote six years ago and it seems like a wise decision to start out a directing career with what sounds like a modest and relatively contained people drama. Learning effects and action can come later, but this picture sounds like a smart low-key vehicle to start dipping his toe into feature-length filmmaking.
