Kevin Smith Hopes To Have 'Red State' Ready For Sundance, Offers More Details About The Film

Kevin Smith has done pretty admirably so far in keeping things mum surrounding his upcoming horror flick "Red State." But we suppose it was only a matter of time before he hit Twitter to answer questions about the film as well as answer a world of questions recently about his "Christploitation" flick.

The director revealed that the film will come in at a very succinct "80 or 85 mins, when all's said & done." He's been shooting the film more or less in chronological order saying, "We're at around 52 minutes right now, with 8 days left to shoot." He hopes to show the film to the entire cast and crew at the wrap party, and it looks like he wants it out there making the festival rounds quickly. The film is without a distributor for now but will head to "Sundance in January, if possible. From there, we'll see the lay of the land."

As for the actual film itself, Smith says "Act 2 is all about self-sufficiency: relying solely on one's own abilities to achieve & satisfy. No more intermediates; no more middle-men." Sounds like a Diddy tweet. He also adds, "In the 70's, they made exploitation flicks about devil worship. We flip it on RED STATE - so it's an exploitation flick about angel worship."

You know what? This might be the first Kevin Smith film we're actually curious about in years. It definitely sounds like an intriguing project, and one that finds him finally stepping out of the tired comfort zone of bathroom rumor he's been rutted in for the last little while.

First Look At Kevin Smith's Horror Film 'Red State'

Kevin Smith has been surprisingly quiet lately, but that's probably because he's in the midst of shooting his horror film, "Red State." However, he recently hit Twitter to give fans a first look at the film and it's tastefully enigmatic.

Details on the film have mostly been kept under wraps, but
it follows a group of kids who encounter a crazed preacher (based on Fred Phelps, founder of the Westboro Baptist Church) who gives a whole new meaning to the term "extreme fundamentalism." And the picture above, seemingly taken from behind the preacher as he plays to his congregation, is an interesting pique.

The film which stars Kevin Pollack, Michael Parks, Kyle Gallner, Melissa Leo, Dermot Mulroney, Michael Angarano, Steven Root and John Goodman is currently shooting and will most likely hit theaters sometime next year. [via /Film]

Stephen Root Latest On Board 'Everybody Loves Whales'

When we finally bite the bullet and sell The Playlist to TMZ for an obscene sum, one of the first things we'll do with the money is set up The Luis Guzman Memorial Club in Hollywood; a private member's bar exclusively and only open to great unsung character actors. You know the type; the guys who don't win awards or headline movies, but elevate everything they're in purely with their presence — Richard Jenkins, William Fichtner, Allison Janney, Titus Welliver, Peter Stormare etc. And one of the first people that we'll offer membership to? Stephen Root.

Root's probably best known for the cult sitcom "NewsRadio" and for his role in "Office Space," but he's been consistently excellent in everything from "The West Wing" and "Dodgeball" to his frequent collaborations with the Coen Brothers. The actor appeared in both "The Conspirator" and "Everything Must Go" at Toronto, and recently joined the surprisingly high-calibre cast of Kevin Smith's "Red State," and now he's come on board the cast of the Working Title comedy-drama "Everybody Loves Whales"

The based-on-reality film, directed by "He's Just Not That Into You" director Ken Kwapis, follows a joint US/Soviet effort during the Cold War to save a trio of trapped whales, and already features a solid cast, led by John Krasinski and Drew Barrymore, with Kristen Bell, Tim Blake Nelson, Ted Danson and Vinessa Shaw all in support. Root will play Gov. Haskell in the film — presumably the governor of Alaska, then? It's not something we're particularly excited about, but any gig that Root books has to be a good thing. In the meantime, he'll also appear in the Ed Helms comedy "Cedar Rapids," and as a voice in Gore Verbinski's "Rango," as well as the aforementioned Toronto movies which both have been picked up by distributors.
