Even though last we heard it was still at least a few years away, Disney is making sure their $4 billion buyout of Marvel starts paying back some of that investment sooner rather than later.
To that end, the studio has purchased the distribution rights for "The Avengers" and "Iron Man 3" from Paramount for a relatively bargain price of $115 million. The money will be owed on the release dates for the films, May 4, 2012 for the former and well, no release date yet for the latter. In fact, this is the first time there has been any release news on an "Iron Man 3" since last we heard it was still a few years away from happening, but now its been scheduled with a May 3, 2013 release date.
But when it does happen, don't expect Jon Favreau to return to the director's chair as relations between the director and the comic company have soured considerably.
As for Paramount, they are still on board to release "Thor" and "Captain America" as planned next year and they will also be releasing Favreau's next film, "Cowboys Vs. Aliens." [Deadline]

Starring Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Don Cheadle as War Machine and Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson you wouldn't be alone in thinking this kind of cast should be doing something a bit more exciting than running around in tights together in "The Avengers." Looks like you're not the only one.
In an interview with SFX, Joss Whedon in describing the challenge of making a comic film that is both fun and smart, jokes that he'd just as soon give the cast the script to David Mamet's "Glengarry Glen Ross." “What I will struggle with, in the outline and throughout, is that I would like to put these actors in a room and just make Glengarry Glen Ross,” says Whedon. “We’re talking about really exciting people and at the same time I have to keep the momentum of the thing going. I can’t let it turn into a lull fest."
As much as we might wish for a David Mamet scripted comic movie that will never happen, we'll just have to see what Whedon himself comes up with. "The Avengers" starts filming next year and will hit theaters on May 4, 2012. Now if you don't mind, we will go to lunch.

It looks like Joss Whedon will follow the lead of Ang Lee and Louis Letterier, and use motion capture to help bring The Hulk to life in "The Avengers."
Mark Ruffalo confirmed with NY Mag that, "They're going to do the Avatar stop-action, stop-motion capture. So I'll actually play the Hulk. That'll be fun." Of course, it's one thing to motion capture a character and another to believably direct it; it remains to be seen if Joss Whedon will be able to smoothly handle what will easily be the most effects-heavy project of his entire career.
As for what me might expect from the character of Bruce Banner, Ruffalo reveals he'll be somewhat inspired by Bill Bixby's works in '70s television series. "I really love the first TV version of it, the Bill Bixby one," Ruffalo said. "I'm gonna shoot for that a little bit. He was an everyman in it. He's always on the run and trying to find love. It's really a sympathetic character, before he turns into the Hulk and fucks everything up."
We'll see the results of a mo-capped Mark Ruffalo when "The Avengers" hits theaters on May 4, 2012.
